To bring more young people into the sport, the Whistler Nordic Club is hosting a cross-country youth club in the New Year for kids aged 12 and up.
The eight-week program will take place on Mondays, from 5 to 7 p.m., starting on Jan. 14, and cost just $20.
The fee includes coaching and access to the Lost Lake trails, but not the equipment rental. However, the Cross Country Connection will provide special deals on Monday rentals for participants, or year-rentals for enthusiasts.
"Weve never offered this kind of program before," says Michelle Crowe, one of the five coaches who are donating their time to the program. "Its basically an extension of the Jackrabbit program and the idea is to get kids out to discover cross country skiing, to have fun, and learn the sport."
All abilities are welcome, and participants will learn both classic and skate techniques.
There are two races in Whistler and two races in Pemberton this year, and the coaches will help any athletes that want to participate or train for those events.
Early registration is recommended, and Crowe says the club will need to know how many kids to expect by Jan. 11.
You can pick up registration forms at the high school from Rita Rice or Miriam Bride, or by calling Crowe at 604-932-4447.
