WORCA holding youth camps

The Whistler Off Road Cycling Association (WORCA) is holding a Youth Dirt Camp on July 25, free to all WORCA junior members.

During the course of the day, certified coaches with World Cup experience will lead the kids through a series of workshops on mountain bike etiquette, bike control (the Ride Don’t Slide theory) safety and technical riding skills.

To take part in the camp, meet at the Glacier Shop at 9 a.m.

Participants are urged to book a space in advance by calling the WORCA hotline at 938-9893, and should bring lunch and a day’s worth of water.

Future WORCA youth dirt camps are also planned for Aug. 15 and 29.

Tennis club services free to youth

With the aid of a $1,000 grant from the Whistler Valley Tennis Club Society, the Whistler Valley Tennis Club in Creekside is offering free instruction and tennis for the rest of the summer to kids from 6 to 17 years old.

"It’s free tennis and free instruction," says club pro Scott Pedersen. "It’s something for the kids to do in the summer, and hopefully we can teach them some tennis here and there. They will get to play a lot."

The free tennis program will run on Wednesday mornings, with the time slots divided up between age groups:

Ages 6 to 8 – 9 to 10 a.m.

Ages 9 to 12 – 10 to 11 a.m.

Ages 13 to 17 – 11 a.m. to noon.

Players must bring their own racquets, but the club will provide other necessary equipment.

For more information, call Pedersen at 938-1215.
