The Whistler Film festival announced the three winning writer-producer teams for its inaugural China Canada Film Script Competition Friday.
The Canadian teams will receive up to $5 million in funding from Chinese production companies to make their projects. Thirteen teams (whittled down from 110 applicants) pitched their ideas to production executives throughout the day at the Whistler Conference Centre.
Butterfly Tale, a 3D animation written by Heidi Foss and produced by Marie-Claude Beauchamp, was chosen by Lifeng Wang, executive director of Wuxi Studios, and CEO of Xing Xing Media; Ivy Zong, vice chair of Galloping Horse, picked Blush, written by a B.C. team of writer Richard Bell and producer Elizabeth Yake; and The Eddie Zhao Story, based on a true tale written by Guy Bennett and produced by Raymond Massey, was picked up by Victoria Hon from Bejing Hairun Pictures.
The projects will be optioned for development over the next three years. The competition is the first of its kind in Canadian film and is set to run through 2014.
