Myrtle Philip Elementary school has a new principal — Jeff Maynard.

The appointment was announced June 20 by district superintendent Lisa McCullough, and will become effective August 1.

For the past five years, Maynard has been a vice-principal at Pemberton's Signal Hill Elementary School, the district's largest elementary school. He holds a Masters of Educational Technology from UBC and has over 12 years teaching experience.

"As a resident of the Whistler community, (Maynard) has a good understanding of what the community values and what is important to them," states a release making the announcement.

"He is a dedicated educational leader that has been actively involved in championing fresh innovative ideas in education. His energy, enthusiasm and commitment to student learning and supporting teachers through Pathways to Learning is evident in all that he does. (Maynard) believes that 'every child can and wants to learn' and that creating a positive learning environment that supports exploration, risk taking and builds on the learners' self-confidence will result in student success.

"He works to ensure school is fun, inspiring, inviting and meaningful for students, building a school culture and identity that empowers teachers and students to strive for excellence."

Myrtle Philip's current principal, Sharon Broatch, is taking on the role of principal at Signal Hill, while Signal Hill's current principal Lisa Bartlett is moving to become principal of Spring Creek Community School.
