The Whistler Mountain Ski Club K2 (ages 13 and 14) race team made the long drive to Terrace last weekend to participate in the Merrill Lynch K2 Provincials at Shames Mountain in super G, giant slalom and slalom. Judging by the results, the trip was worth it.
Even with the top K2 skiers in Panorama for the Canadian Juvenile Championships, the Whistler skiers posted more than their fair share of top 15 results and podiums.
The WMSC men kicked it off on March 22 with a super G. Although they missed out on a podium, the club put five races in the top 15. Jonathan Wells was fifth, Thomas Kasperkiewicz seventh, James McLean eighth, Taylor McGovern 10th and Ryan Vaisler 12 th .
In the top 30, out of a field of 54 racers, were Philip Lake in 24 th , Ng Benz in 27 th and Conrad Pridy in 28 th . James McSkimming, Derek Tsui, Rey Stanislas, Sean Vaisler, Adrian Levine, Anthony Berkes and Enrico Guld also competed for the WMSC.
The women stepped up once again to claim seven of the top 15 spots, including two podiums; Katherine Cape won the gold medal and Haley McLeish took bronze.
Also for Whistler, Alexandria Browne-Munz was fourth, Shannon Smith fifth, Nadia Samer seventh, Jillian McArthur 11 th , and Larissa-Paige Avery 14 th . In the top 30 were Naomi harrington in 24 th and Caroline Scott in 25 th . None of the WMSC racers finished outside the top 30.
In the mens giant slalom, Whistlers Conrad Pridy came out on top to win the gold medal. James McLean finished seventh, James McSkimming 11 th , and Philip Lake 13 th to round out the top 15.
In the top 30, Jonathan Wells just missed the cut and finished in 16 th . Ryan Vaisler was 22 nd , Rey Stanislas 24 th , and Taylor McGovern 27 th . Ng Benz, Derek Tsui and Sean Vaisler of the WMSC just missed the cut, finishing 31 st through 33 rd respectively. Adrian Levine, Anthony Berkes, Thomas Kasperkiewicz and Enrico Guld also raced.
Two Whistler girls landed on the podium once again, Katherine Cape in second place and Alexandria Browne-Munz in third. Nadia Samer was fifth, Jillian McArthur seventh, and Shannon Smith ninth.
In the top 30 were Larissa-Paige Avery in 24 th , Naomi Harrington in 25 th , Mikaela Wilmot in 27 th , and Caroline Scott in 30 th . Once again, all of the Whistler racers were in the top 30.
In the mens slalom on March 24, Whistlers best result was James McLean in fifth, followed by Conrad Pridy in sixth. Rey Stanislas was 12 th and James McSkimming 15 th .
In the top 30 were Phlip Lake in 17 th , Jonathan Wells in 19 th , Derek Tsui in 26 th , and Sean Vaisler in 30 th . Ng Benz was 31 st once again.
Also racing were Taylor McGovern, Ryan Vaisler, Adrian Levine and Enrico Guld.
The girls were back again in the slalom, adding two more medals to the collection. Alexandria Browne-Munz won the gold medal this time, and Jillian McArthur was third. Shannon Smith was eighth, and Mikaela Wilmot 11 th .
Katherine Cape was 16 th , and Naomi Harrington 23 rd to round out the top 30. Larissa-Paige Avery was close in 31 st place.
