Due to the heavy snowfall and popular demand, Whistler Blackcomb confirmed on Tuesday that it would be extending the closing date for Whistler Mountain from April 18 to April 25, the last day of the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival.
Blackcomb will remain open until May 24 as planned. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is still focused on a May 15 opening.
According to Whistler Blackcomb spokesperson Tabetha Boot, the April 18 closure was considered necessary to perform maintenance on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola and Whistler Village Gondola in time for summer sightseeing.
"The reason why (we decided to stay open) is guest feedback and demand, but we were also able to shuffle the maintenance schedule to keep Whistler open an extra week," she explained.
"We have a limited window to work on both lifts, but by shuffling things around we were able to stay open a little later in April without pushing back our timeline to reopen in May."
The Peak 2 Peak will close as scheduled for maintenance after Sunday, April 18, but visitors can still upload via the Whistler Village Gondola until the following Sunday, April 25. The Creekside gondola will close as scheduled on April 19.
The winter season is still going strong with more than 80 cm of snow falling over the past week and a snow base over 360 cm. The 2009-2010 season is also the third-snowiest on record with 1,350 cm of cumulative snowfall. Whistler Blackcomb is closing in on the second-snowiest record at 1,416 cm.
