An 18-year-old Vancouver man has drowned after jumping into Mamquam Falls on the Mamquam River with friends. The accident took place near the BC Hydro power plant outside of Squamish.
Sgt. Wayne Pride from the Squamish RCMP said the man, who is not being named at this time, died at 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
Two youths were in distress after jumping into the water due to strong currents and unable to get out.
Squamish Fire Rescue, Squamish Search and Rescue and the RCMP arrived to help, along with workers from the nearby power plant.
One youth was pulled out of the water, but the 18-year-old did not survive and the search for his body has continued through Thursday, after being called off due to safety concerns about the location and condition of the water.
The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team was advised and the scene was evaluated Thursday morning with the intent to perform a recovery operation for the body. At this time the water levels and powerful currents make conditions too hazardous to attempt an underwater recovery.
The Squamish Search and Rescue unit is continuing its attempts in the area. For safety tips on water outings, go to: Click here
