Vaccinations offered at Turkey Sale

Come for the discounts, stay for a shot in the arm.

The provincial Travel Medicine and Vaccination Centre will be holding its seventh annual flu vaccination clinic this weekend as part of the annual Whistler-Blackcomb Turkey Sale and Whistler Mountain Ski Club Ski Swap.

An information booth will be set up inside the ski swap tent from Oct. 5 to 7, during Turkey Sale hours.

The price is $20 per person.

If you are over 65 or have a chronic illness, you may be entitled to a free flu shot; check with your doctor to find out. The list includes adults and children with heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, diabetes, anemia, cancer, or an immune disorder such as HIV. Health care workers and other first responders, such as the police, fire fighters and paramedics also qualify for free shots.

This clinic is aimed at those who do not qualify for free vaccinations who would like to reduce the risk of contracting the flu this winter.

The flu thrives in typical office environments and other places where people interact at close quarters. One in four people contracts the flu each year, and each infected person will lose between three and five days of work. The vaccine reduces the risk of catching the flu by more than 70 per cent, according to the Ministry of Health Services.
