Younger skiers aged 10 and 11 from the Whistler Mountain Ski Club headed to Mt. Washington this past weekend to take part in Rio Tinto-Alcan's "Experience the Podium" Nancy Greene League event, bringing the total number of participants to almost 200.
Despite the number of participants, WMSC skiers found a way to finish on top.
Maja Woolley won all four events — slalom, speed trap, kombi and long jump.She managed a top speed of 75km/h in the speed race, and shared her win in the jump with teammate Rosie Smith after both skiers cleared a total of 32 feet from the takeoff.
Smith also finished with a bronze in the kombi and tied for silver in the speed trap.
Gemma Bexton was fifth in kombi and slalom, Arabella Ng earned a silver in slalom, was fourth in the kombi and third on the jump, tying Cate Melenchuk and Kristen Kranjc for distance. Paris Boucher won a silver in the speed race.
In the boy's event, Nathan Romanin crashed hard in the slalom, but won the kombi and placed second in speed trap and the jump contest.
Eric Smith won the U12 jump with a 40-footer and won gold in the speed trap, and missed out on a bronze — won by teammate Tait Jordan — by five one-hundredths of a second. He also placed fourth in kombi.
In the U11 (10-year-old) competitions, Lauren Van Vliet earned a bronze in speed trap, and Freya Jumonville won a bronze in kombi.
For the boys, Ethan Shandro won silver in kombi, bronze in slalom, a silver in speed trap and another bronze on the jump. In the speed event he tied with teammates Skylar Beauregard and David Lee. Beauregard added a silver in the slalom.
