Did you know your kids could ski for free at Whistler Blackcomb this winter?
Earlier this year, Whistler Blackcomb's parent company Vail Resorts announced plans to introduce the Epic SchoolKids program at the resort. The initiative offers Canadian and Washington State Kindergarten through Grade 5 students five free days of skiing or riding at Whistler Blackcomb, but the deadline for registration is fast approaching.
Parents have until the end of Saturday, Oct. 6 to sign up for Epic SchoolKids, which also includes one free ski or snowboard lesson and one day of free rentals for brand new skiers or snowboarders.
"Our goal is to ensure that the mountain does remain accessible to our local and regional community so that we are bringing new people into the sport ... From what we've seen in our other communities, that really helps to bring out the more casual skier and really gets kids in the sport, along with their parents," explained Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz during a sit-down interview with Pique in May.
Over 11,000 kids between Canada and Washington State have already signed up to receive an Epic SchoolKids pack this winter.
According to a release, the addition of the program in Canada and Washington State has resulted in "unprecedented growth" for the program, which is also available in Colorado and Utah. Vail Resorts said it expects registration numbers to continue to grow before the enrolment period ends.
"The Epic SchoolKids program provides great value for families already involved in skiing or snowboarding who would like to do more, and offers a great opportunity to get first-timers out on the snow," said Pete Sonntag, chief operating officer at Whistler Blackcomb in a release.
"We are thrilled to see such a strong response going into the 2018/19 season and look forward to seeing everyone on the mountain this winter."
No purchase is necessary to participate in the Epic SchoolKids program, although proof of Canadian and Washington State residency is required. The program is subject to some restrictions during holiday and peak periods. Registration concludes Sunday, Oct. 7.
