Ullr was merciless last weekend; throwing wind and snow at five
action sports photographers who shot it out at the Deep Winter Photo Challenge.
Photographers were challenged to brave beyond the picturesque
bluebird days and shoot Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains in all their storming
glory at the Whistler-Blackcomb and Arc’teryx sponsored competition.
Images depicted skiers twisting across backgrounds of snow-laden
trees and boarders dropping through powder that almost swallowed athletes
But it was the detail-driven and broad-scoped presentation of
photography legend Paul Morrison that won over crowds and earned him the title
of King of Storms.
Morrison’s slide presentation spanned everything from raging
powder torrents and blue multi-hued icicles to microscopic crystals found in a
single water drop.
Morrison won $1,500 for first prize, Dano Pendygrasse won $1,000 for second and Chris Christie $750 for third.
