Registration is slowly picking up but there are lots of spots available for the 13 th annual Squamish Triathlon: A Memorial to Bob McIntosh, which takes place Sunday, July 11.
The race includes a 1,500 metre swim in Alice Lake, which has warmed up considerably in the last week. The swim leg is followed by a downhill ride across Highway 99 and onto a 37 km bike course that includes four circuits of Squamish Valley Road to Government Road, Depot Road to Highway 99 and back again. The transition between the bike and the 10 km off-road run - one of the only off-road runs in an event sanctioned by Triathlon B.C., and good training for Xterra in September - is at Don Ross Secondary.
You can race as a solo or as a member of a relay team. The cost is $85 for adults, $65 for youth, $156 for a three-person relay or $104 for a two-person relay. If you're already a member of TriBC you can deduct $15 for individual racers and $5 for relay racers.
The race gets underway at 9:30 a.m., but racers are asked to show up at 7 a.m. to set up transitions, get body markings, swim caps and timing chips. Swimmers and cyclists also need to board a bus that takes athletes to the start at Alice Lake before 8:15 a.m. to ensure that they're in place on time.
The event is great for spectators, with shuttles from the swim leg back to Don Ross, where you can watch riders pass by four times and runners pass by three times as they head out, make two laps of the singletrack and run to the finish.
Road closures and restrictions will be in place that motorists should be aware of. There will be delays and a 20-minute highway closure between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to give cyclists a chance to cross the highway. One of two southbound lanes on Highway 99 will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the bike course, between Alice Lake and Depot Road.
From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. all southbound traffic on Squamish Valley Road will be detoured to Government Road; northbound traffic on Government Road will be detoured to Depot Road and Highway 99; westbound traffic on Depot Road will be detoured to Highway 99. Local traffic only will be permitted on Ross Road.
