The coordinator of the Whistler Homestay Program is once again appealing to Whistlerites to open their homes to alpine ski race volunteers next month.
Donna Savage said she is still hoping to have local homeowners sign up to the program, which matches volunteers with residents during the upcoming alpine Canadian Championships (Feb. 9-12) and the Whistler World Cup (Feb. 21-24).
And while she is thankful to those community members who have signed up already, Savage is hoping others will follow suit in the next week as the deadline looms and volunteers are left without rooms in Whistler.
“The international skiing community is going to see Whistler,” said Savage. “We need to make this a first class event. We need the volunteers to do that and we need somewhere to put them.”
The World Cup alone requires 800 volunteers and while many are housed through existing relationships with Weasel Workers, there is an overflow of volunteers who still need a place to call home for a few days.
The Whistler Homestay program requires that applicants provide a minimum of four consecutive nights of accommodation in Whistler between Jan. 30 and Feb. 26.
“The events must be successful,” said Savage, “and we need volunteers for it to be successful.”
