Golf tourney brings a little bit of Texas to the Mountains What: Longhorn Texas Scramble and Calcutta Where: Big Sky Golf and Country Club/Longhorn When: July 29 The first annual Longhorn Texas Scramble and Calcutta Golf Tourney is taking place on Wednesday, July 29 at Big Sky Golf and Country Club. The competition will be donating funds to support local man John Ryan's 1999 Cross-Canada Tour. Ryan is hoping this journey will raise $5 million for Spinal Cord Research. Ryan lost the use of his legs two and a half years ago in a car accident. He will be cycling across Canada with a modified bike that is propelled by his arms, starting in May, 1999 in Nova Scotia. The deadline for pre-registration into the event is this Sunday, July 26. On Tuesday, July 28 a social evening is planned at the Longhorn, so the players in the Golf Tourney can get to know each other. On the day of the Tourney there will be shotgun start at 1 p.m. "All the players start at the same time at different holes," explains organizer Scott Ainscough. "We're aiming to get 120 to 144 participants in the event. It'll be a lot of fun. It's geared towards locals and we hope to fill the event." Ainscough hopes the event will raise up to $6,000 for Ryan's quest. "It's a really important thing for the community to get behind and show John our support, show we're behind him. He's currently biking 30-60 miles a day for his training, as well as doing stuff in the gym. He has a modified chair that'll enable him to play in the event so that should be really neat." After the Golf Tourney the party takes place at the Longhorn. "Well be going back to the Longhorn for the awards banquet," says Ainscough. "Everyone will get their awards and party. We'll whoop it up."
