The much-anticipated Rainbow Plaza, a mixed retail and residential complex slated for Whistler's north end, is expected to open in early summer, according to developers.
Originally slated to open its doors this spring, Calgary-based developer Ronmor confirmed both the residential and retail components should be ready by late June, although some of the planned stores may not welcome customers until July or August.
"We're just so anxious to finish it and I'm sure (Whistlerites) are looking to the end of construction," said Ronmor's VP of development Doug Porozni. "I think it's very high quality, it's a really good looking project and we can't wait to get it finished."
Plans for the 2,230-square-metre commercial space include a Pikolo Espresso Bar, a private liquor store and a Your Independent Grocer store, scheduled to open before the end of the year, according to a representative for Loblaw Companies.
"With an overriding philosophy centred on providing personal customer service and offering a wide assortment of fresh food at great prices, the (Your Independent Grocer) stores and their employees seek to build a reputation as the best shop in town," wrote PR spokesperson Benjamin Wylie in an email.
There remains one commercial bay to fill, Porozni said, which may be split into two retail spaces.
Residents won't have to wait as long for Whistler's second gas station. Chevron spokesperson Adrien Byrne said the full-service station should be open by the first week of May after a chilly winter delayed construction.
The 223-square-metre site is set to include four fuel dispensers with two nozzles each, a convenience store, an electric charging station and a Tesla charging station. The station will also offer diesel, as well as 94 octane fuel for high-performance vehicles.
Rainbow Plaza should also offer some relief to Whistler's strained housing market with the addition of 65 resident-restricted rental units offered through the Whistler Housing Authority (WHA). Porozni said pricing on the units should be confirmed shortly. Tenants are expected to take occupancy later in the summer.
