New fencing and gates installed at a private CN Rail crossing at the end of Alpha Lake Road in Function Junction were vandalized recently, prompting a warning from the RCMP and Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW).
"The new gates (were) put into place to protect pedestrians and cyclists," an RMOW spokesperson said.
"Illegal entry to this crossing is being actively patrolled by the RCMP and CN Rail Police."
The fencing and gates were installed by the RMOW on September 25 at CN's request, as a condition for the municipality's continued use of the crossing to access its main sewer, which follows the rail line.
The fencing was installed to restrict access to RMOW staff only — anyone else who accesses the railroad property is not only trespassing, but risking personal injuries as well, according to the RMOW.
The damaged fence will be repaired by the municipality at a cost to Whistler taxpayers. Damage was estimated at $1,500.
Police said the vandalism occurred sometime between 4 p.m. on Nov. 2 and 8 a.m. on Nov. 3. No suspects have been identified at this point.
"Any acts of vandalism are taken seriously and people can be charged with mischief to property," noted Whistler RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair.
