The Spanish Civil War, which was waged from 1936 to 1939, galvanized the attention of the Western world. And the reason that so many were transfixed by the Spanish tragedy was that developing technology enabled many people to see war in a new light. Battlefront and trench photography brought the spectator into the action, and showed the conflict in often graphic fashion. Images of wartime action became ideological props, and the media were made to tell certain stories about the conflict.
