Phat Wednesday takes the B-Line

Strong turnout for return of downhill racing series

The first Phat Wednesday Downhill Series race of the season took place on Wednesday, June 14, with a near record turnout of 90 riders taking part – the second biggest turnout in three years.

The course was a rip down B-Line and Heart of Darkness that was more challenging than some riders expected. While easier than some other trails B-Line has enough twists and turns to keep even the top riders up out of their seats.

It was also a close race for the men with less than a second separating second from fifth, and 73 riders in the gate.

The race was run by Whistler-Blackcomb, with sanctioning by WORCA. In addition the sponsors helped with the event and the after party, while also donating prizes including a new SRAM X9 drive train, Kokanee clothing, a Nintendo DS system and games, Fox clothing and pads, WTB saddles and tires, and more.

The next race will be on Wednesday, June 28, with registration just after 5 p.m., and organizers are hoping to crack the 100 rider mark.

The course is Angry Pirate, World Cup Singletrack and Ho Chin Min.

Other Phat Wednesday races are on July 12, August 2, August 16 and August 30. There is only one event in July because of the Crankworx mountain bike festival (July 22-30).

You’ll need a WORCA membership to take part. If you don’t have a 2006 WORCA membership they will be available at the event for $40 and they can also be purchased online at

The cost of the race is $2, which includes food and refreshments.
