Phat Wednesday riders near the limit


The second Phat Wednesday race of the season took place on a slightly tougher selection of trails, starting with a rip down Angry Pirate to Crabapple Corners to Samurai Pizza Cat and the bottom part of Ho Chih Min. Some 195 riders took part in the June 30 event, just five short of the 200-rider limit, and the competition was fierce.

Evan Turpen posted the low time in the Open Male category, placing first out of over 120 riders with a time of 3:20.75. Kenny Smith was second in 3:25.71 and Nick Geddes third in 3:27.89. Rounding out the top 10 were Paul Stevens in 3:28.13, Harry Armstrong in 3:29.46, Stephen Matthews in 3:29.82, Dylan Wolsky in 3:30.74, Tyler Allison in 3:31.17, Berend Boer in 3:32.07 and Chris Gray in 3:33.86.

Andrew Gunn won the Master Male 30-Plus category in 3:35.69, followed by Bart Brown in 3:37.68 and Seb Kemp in 3:39.17. In the top 10 were Richard Bedford in 3:39.80, Joel Robinson in 3:43.11, Chad Hendren in 3:46.07, Todd Hellinga in 3:46.24, Jon Burr in 3:48.74, Mark Wood in 3:50.29 and Allan Golds in 3:52.25.

The top female this week was Sarah Leishman in 3:56.28. She was followed by Rebecca McQueen in 4:02.49 and Brook Baker in 4:04.04. In the top 10 were Kari Mancer in 4:09.90, Sarah Newman in 4:15.04, Kiersten Lone in 4:18.49, Jen Ashton in 4:18.96, Jamie Hill in 4:19.25, Dawn Cashen in 4:20.40 and Fanny Paquette in 4:21.01.

Daniel Norton was the top junior in 3:39.22, followed by Ollie Gregory-Jones in 3:41.30 and Xander Geddes in 3:41.92. In the top 10 were Oscar Lapstun in 3:46.35, Curtis Warcup in 3:47.69, Cam Johnson in 3:50.81, Benedict Fredenmann in 3:56.94, Jonathan Allyn in 4:02.01, Jamie Hoare in 4:04.02 and Skylar Allan in 4:21.87.

Stewart Lill and Steve Storey won the draw prize for the Sram drive trains, Charles Renaud-Roy won the Hayes Brakes, Xander Geddes and Samuel Hardy won the Maxxi tires, Tristan O'Callaghan won the Sun Rims, and Aaron Lyons won the Kali full-face helmet. Other prizes were handed out from Race Face, Odi, Decline Magazine, Dakine, the Garbanzo Bike and Bean, the GLC and Kokanee.

The first PhaSt Wednesday race series event took place yesterday (July 7) with a course geared to expert riders and racers. The next Phat Wednesday for intermediate riders is on July 14, followed by an event on July 21.

Registration gets underway at 5 p.m. at the Garbanzo Bike and Bean; the race is at 6 p.m. You need a WORCA membership and bike park pass to participate (discounted passes available to racers), plus chip $2 into the pot for the top riders to share. Sponsors Kokanee and the GLC provide post-race food and refreshments.
