Pemberton council asks train operator to look north

Pemberton council wants the Rocky Mountaineer train to stop in the Pemberton Valley.

The luxury passenger train service which will run on the BC Rail tracks between Vancouver and Jasper, Alberta, with an overnight stop in Prince George, isn’t scheduled to start until May of 2006. But after receiving a letter from Rocky Mountaineer Vacations, the train operator, Mayor Elinor Warner instructed staff to investigate ways of getting the train to stop in their town.

Prior to Christmas Rocky Mountaineer Vacations hosted eight product partnership workshops concerning the Whistler Mountaineer and Rocky Mountaineer trains in towns along the BC Rail route. Pemberton was not one of those towns.

The initial response from Peter Armstrong, the CEO of Rocky Mountaineer Vacations, regarding Pemberton as a destination was not particularly promising.

But this is still a situation that could develop for Pemberton because the town is experiencing rapid growth, it has a rich history and there are developers looking to establish more amenities for the town.

"First of all we’d like them to come here and do a workshop," said Warner. "Then we can see what we’d have to do for the train to stop here."
