With longer days and warmer temperatures comes, you guessed it, construction season.
The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is preparing to pave Day Lot 5, with work slated to begin on Tuesday, April 3. Day Lot 5 will remain closed to the public during construction, which is expected to wrap on June 15.
The upgrades aim to improve the driving surface and layout on the previously gravel-only lot, and result in lower maintenance costs. In addition to paving and line painting, construction will include additional lighting, improved storm water drainage, creation of a new sand and salt shed and landscaping improvements.
The RMOW is encouraging residents and guests to use alternative modes of transportation, like transit, cycling, carpooling and walking, in addition to parking in other areas, while work is underway (head to www.whistler.ca/movingwhistler for more).
"A huge thank you to the public for their patience with this important infrastructure project," said Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden in a release. "With the beginning of spring, now is a great time to take the bus, ride your bike or walk the Valley Trail to Whistler Village. Once the upgrades are complete, I encourage you to continue using the many active transportation methods available in Whistler to travel to the Village and beyond."
Construction in Day Lot 5 isn't the only transportation change Whistlerites will notice this month: Winter pay parking in Day Lot 4 ends April 15. Pay parking in the lot (first instated last summer as part of the recommendations from the Transportation Action Plan) will resume again during the peak summer period. It's set to begin June 15 and remain in effect until September 15.
Winter Parking regulations also ended over the weekend. That means neighbourhood street parking on the even side of streets is permitted from now until October 31 (keep in mind parking on the odd side of neighbourhood streets is not permitted at any time of year).
Whistler transit will transition to the late winter schedule on Tuesday, April 3 before moving to the full spring, summer, and fall schedule on April 23. Full schedule details can be found at www.bctransit.com/Whistler.
