The Whistler Outdoor Volleyball Association (WOVA) started post-season on Aug. 20, with all teams qualifying for the first round and regular season standings seeding top teams against bottom teams in a tournament format.
As during the regular season, each team played two matches against two different opponents and double elimination meant the end of the season for half the playing field. Teams that went 2-0 the first week advanced, and teams that went 1-1 with the most points advanced as well.
“This structure made it really exciting for an initial round of playoffs because every point mattered,” said Scott Rogers, WOVA founder and director. “I was amazed at the turnout, as the weather was brutal every time we came out to play. Not ideal for beach volleyball, but attendance was near perfect. That shows the level of dedication and how much players were enjoying themselves.”
The second and final week of playoffs concluded last week with a single elimination format. The Division A champions are the Dirt Dogs, defeating the Point Breakers in two games (21-6 and 27-25). The teams tied for first in the regular season with identical records of 16-2.
Division B champions are the Donkeys, defeating the Sand-Diggers. Both teams had identical first place regular season records.
The Division C champions are We’re Gonna Spank U, who defeated the Spikopaths. Spank U finished first in their division in the regular season.
Rogers says one of the things he noticed this year was the number of players talking about moving up a division next year.
The awards presentation and wrap-up party, which is open to the public, is Friday, Sept. 5 at 9 p.m. at the Longhorn Saloon. The theme is beach party.
WOVA would like to thank the RMOW, all participants, and primary sponsors at Sport Stop, Whistler Brewing and the Longhorn Saloon for another successful season.
