What: DJ Jazzy Jeff
When: Saturday, Oct. 20
Where: Moe Joe’s
You’ll probably remember his quirky humour as “Jazz” on the hit television show Fresh Prince of Bel Air. You’ll see his producing credits listed alongside names such as Michael Jackson and Eminem. He clocks in more than 20 years of recording with Will Smith.
But, dancers know him best. Not as Jeffrey Towns the producer, recording artist, actor and spokesperson, but instead as DJ Jazzy Jeff, the world’s premier hip hop party.
Jazzy Jeff returns to Whistler with a new album Saturday, Oct. 20 at Moe Joe’s.
The former television star is back on the music score once again with this year’s release of The Return of the Magnificent . The album features Jazzy Jeff’s legendary hip hop beats, including De La Soul, J-Live, Jean Grae, Method Man and Big Daddy Kane.
Towns began mixing when he was covering the block party circuit in West Philadelphia. Thirty years later, he’s won three Grammy Awards; the first for his album , Parents Just Don’t Understand . The double-platinum record propelled Towns and his storytelling sidekick Fresh Prince, a.k.a. Will Smith, into the spotlight with the hit single, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper.
The duo continued to record and diversify their outreach. They launched the first pop star 900 number, logging in 3 million calls and bringing in more money than their record sales.
Many other firsts followed and Towns became the first corporately sponsored DJ. He also designed the first mixer for scratching, the Gemini 2200. As a DJ, Towns is most famous for his transformer scratch.
And the credits keep rolling with the Homebase single Summertime garnering a Grammy and Code Red’s single Boom! Shake the Room becoming the third rap single to go number one in the U.K.
Through 10 years of working together Towns and Smith released five albums, sold 14 million records and won two Grammy and three American Music Awards.
As Smith began to focus on a television and movie career, Towns turned his attention to his production house, A Touch of Jazz. He began producing Smith’s albums as well as artists Eminem, Dave Hollister, Floetry, Lil Kim and Michael Jackson.
Town’s first solo album, The Magnificent, was released in 2002. Now, five years later, it’s The Return of the Magnificent .
