One of Canada's longstanding underground techno-turntablists, toibas.dj, has returned to Whistler and is bringing his sonic signature to Black's Pub Sept. 11 for Frequency Fridays.

Tobias hails from the West Coast, having grown up in the triangle of Vancouver, Whistler and Maui, but he's spent the last eight years in Montreal, DJing and curating events with MUTEK, the Society for Arts and Technology, Casa del Popolo and Laika. He is known to veteran Whistlerites from DJing full moon parties and outdoor gatherings up and down the Sea to Sky corridor in the '90s. He's also held residencies in Vancouver at Celebrities, The Sugar Refinery, Video-In and New Forms Festival.

Internationally, tobias has DJ'd everywhere from Eyebeam in New York City to Amsterdam's Melkweg, Barcelona's Coldcreation Gallery and Noah Pred's Fukhouse night in Toronto.

Not only does he play music, tobias has also written extensively on electronic music culture. His publishing credits include WIRE , Discorder , Leonardo Music Journal , eli , Grooves , CAPITAL , FUSE , SylusMagazine.com and others.

Tobias is also a PhD candidate in Philosophy and Communication studies at McGill University, writing on remix culture, philosophy of technology and Afrofuturism.

His DJ style is marked by the cut-up and non-linear mixing styles of three-deck future techno and house: Detroit, minimal, dub, glitch and acid. As a techno-turntablist he has honed his craft seeking new and obscure sounds to move the body, always dedicated to the underground sound.

Frequency Fridays raise money for the Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment through sales of Russell beer, the evening's sponsor.
