In memory of Sonia Dery, the Meadow Park Sports Centre lifeguard who was killed in an accident last week, the Sonia Dery Memorial Fund has been established at the Whistler TD bank. The fund will be used to provide swimming lessons to First Nations children. Dery loved to teach children to swim and particularly enjoyed teaching students from the Xit’olacw Community School in Mount Currie. A memorial service was held for the 22 year old on Sunday. The family asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the memorial fund. A Whistler tradition continues May 4 with a European dinner and dance at Myrtle Philp Community School. A five-piece European band will be providing the music, while proceeds will go to local non-profit organizations. European folk costumes are encouraged. Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. There will be a cash bar. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m. Dancing is from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Call Luise or Willy at 932-6062, Heidi at 932-7001 or drop by the Chamber of Commerce information centre for tickets.
