There is a new crisis toll free phone line for the Sea to Sky corridor that will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The service will be offered by the Crisis Centre for Greater Vancouver, a non-profit agency dedicated to providing support and assistance to callers in crisis, enabling them to cope more effectively with stressful situations.
The line will be staffed by volunteers who have gone through a 10-week training program on crisis intervention.
The volunteers will provide support for people to vent and stabilize their emotions.
The line will replace the current 604-932-COPE in Whistler, which will be phased out over the next six months.
Whistler Community Services took over the COPE phone line in 1996. Concerned local citizens originally set up the line in response to two young adult suicides.
Starting on Oct. 30 that line will have a message indicating that the number has been changed to 1-866-661-3311, the distress line offered by the Crisis Centre for Greater Vancouver.
