Mountain bikers tackle the Bear

The second of five mountain bike events on the SISU B.C. Cup Challenge took place at Bear Mountain in Mission last weekend, with Whistler riders taking part in both the cross-country and downhill competitions.

In the Under 15 Men’s race, Whistler’s Brandon Semenuk finished second overall with a time of 45 minutes and 42 seconds, 1:10 back of the leader.

James Crowe was second once again to Squamish’s Neal Kindree in the Junior Expert Men’s race. Kindree finished in 1:49:50 and Crowe in 1:59:00.

Michael Boehm was fifth among the Master 30 to 39 Expert Men with a time of 2:04:57, 11:29 back of the leader. Trevor Hopkins was seventh in the same category, seven minutes back of Boehm.

Marilyn Hellier was fourth in the Master 30 and Over Expert Women’s category in 1:55:48, just over 20 minutes back of the leader. Jodie Hopkins was eighth in 2:32:27.

Tony Routley and Eric Crowe battled it out for first place in the Master 40 and Over Expert title, and in the end it was Routley in 1:21:46, followed by Crowe in 1:23:02. Mike Charuk was seventh in 1:30:19.

In the downhill race, three Whistler riders and two Squamish riders finished in the top-10 out of a field of 40 racers.

From Squamish, Shaums March was first with a time of four minutes, 2.18 seconds and Thomas Vanderham ninth in 4:14.45.

From Whistler, Chris Dewar was third in 4:05.07, Tyler Morland fourth in 4:09.04 and Jeff Beatty sixth in 4:11:52.

Greg MacDonald was sixth in the Master 30 and Over Expert race with a time of 4:48.25.

Daniel Nezil was seventh among the Senior Beginner Men is 5:04.82.

Adam Cook won the Senior Expert Men’s category in 4:11.31, which would have put him sixth in the Senior Elite race.

Stacey Kohut also raced in that category, completing the course in a downhill chair in 11:50.81.

Brook Baker, who is in her first year out of junior, finished second in the Elite Women’s race with a time of 4:57.09, just over 20 seconds behind pro rider Danika Schroeter.

In the Senior Expert Women’s race, local cross-country star Angela Teng finished first in 5:06.09.

Under 15 racer Alex Prochazka finished first out of 22 riders in his category, completing the course in 4:46.76, almost seven seconds ahead of his closest competition.
