In a resort staffed, in part, by young transient lovers of beer and dope, and snow-shredding temporary foreign workers, the ones who stay for a decade or more stand out.
DJ Miss KosmiK, a.k.a. Marie Fortin, is one such Whistlerite.
Performing around the resort since 2009, she first came here 17 years ago — and she is celebrating her 20th anniversary as her alter-ego Miss KosmiK at the Shiny Disco Ball at the Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC) on Thursday, March 9, at 9:30 p.m.
"I started to use the name in my hometown Chicoutimi (in Quebec) when I was organizing Ravevolution, my first event," she recalls. "I was in Quebec City dancing one night and it came to me, these kinds of nights were what I wanted to share at home.
"The name stuck with me after and when I became a DJ it was already there."
She became at first an event creator and promoter, creating Big Bang Winter Solstice Celebrations, Frequency Fridays, Elevate and BallistiK.
The Shiny Disco Ball will feature live guitar from Neighbour over original remixes and edits of underground house, classic techno and funky dance music.
There will also be a Rich Glass Photo Booth for attendees to pose in.
Miss KosmiK plays at 10:30 p.m. DJ Grant opens at 9:30 p.m.
"It will be a great night of awesome dancing," she says.
"There will be lots of funky breaky house and people should get dressed up in shiny outfits. It will be so much fun."
Miss KosmiK was introduced to Neighbour at her first Shambhala in 2009.
"That year he performed a legendary set with live synthesizer and live guitar at the top of the Pagoda Stage wearing spandex overalls," she recalls.
"I have been a fan ever since."
Along with being one of the still-too-few regular female DJs on the Whistler circuit, Miss KosmiK is a regular at Whistler Junglists nights at Tommy Africa's, which she calls a highlight of her musical career.
She is also one of the resident opening DJs for performers the Junglists bring to town.
"It has been a great way to build the DJ scene in Whistler," she says.
She also has fond memories of the now-defunct outdoor Full Moon Parties, where up to 800 people would turn up to dance the night away under the stars.
Miss KosmiK's music is available on SoundCloud and her next show is Black & White at Moe Joe's on March 15..
Tickets to Shiny Disco Ball are $10 and are available at the GLC or online at www.whistlerblackcomb.com/shinydiscoball.
