Local volleyballers second in province

The Windermere Whistler Extreme women’s volleyball team came up huge at the Tier 2 Provincial Championships on March 16 against the top teams from Vancouver and Victoria.

Although the team has been successful in tournaments, they had no idea how they would stack up at the provincials.

After four games, the Extreme found themselves in second place in the round robin. They earned a by into the semi-final playoffs against a young team from Simon Fraser University.

"We really came out hard in this game," said Extreme setter Carlee Howell. "We were in the zone and remained motivated and high-spirited the whole way through and so we came out on top."

In the finals, they took on Paradise Cove from Victoria. The Extreme took the first game 25-23, and lost the second 27-25. Evenly matched, both teams played well in the final game, but the breaks went to Paradise Cove. They won 18-16.

"We played absolutely amazing all day long and we came together as a team and peaked at the right time during this tournament. We could all taste first place, but are extremely happy and proud with second," said Howell.

Wanda Chalk used her experience and height in the middle to make some great blocks in the final, even though she was still recovering from a foot injury.

Shelly Legingham hit well, and served up several aces in the tournament.

Jennifer Johnson scored several crucial points for the Extreme with her offside hits and powerful serves, and set well during the day.

Howell was solid setting on defence and dug for some good saves on defence. Georgina Titus was consistent in her hitting and passing throughout the tournament, and kept the ball in play on numerous occasions.

Olga Achiardi played well on offence and defence, making key passes and keeping some balls alive.

Laura Wetaski made some great line shots, digs and sets to carry the team through the day.

Howell says the Whistler Extreme is looking forward to next season, and hopes that all of the players will be returning. The team also thanks Windermere Real Estate for their sponsorship.
