Library closes for training

The Whistler Public Library will be closed two extra days next week, from Tuesday, Dec. 17 to Thursday, Dec. 19. Staff will receive training on the new library system to be implemented in January. We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause.

The new system will take the library to the next level of library service – that of a virtual library catalogue accessible 24 hours a day seven days a week. The system we selected is called Horizon Sunrise and was developed by epixtech, the leading provider of automation technologies, solutions and services for libraries worldwide. The public will now have the ability to access our catalogue on the Web from the library, home, school or the office. The catalogue will indicate whether the library owns the book, if it is in or out, and will also provide book reviews, summaries and book cover art, similar to what is seen on Online users will be able to review their accounts as well as place reserves from within the library and remotely. I will keep you posted as to when we will change systems.

The Adopt a Book Program through the Whistler Public Library is the perfect gift for the special person in your life whether that person is a partner, friend or child. Through this program you can help the Whistler Public Library maintain their high standard book collection. By donating $35, you can adopt a book in your area of interest – fiction, non-fiction, children's books, science fiction, arts, humanities, business and technology. Or if you donate $700, you can adopt a book for life, which means your adopted book is identified with a book plate with your name or the name of the lucky person who is the recipient of this unique gift. The program is not just restricted to books, either. It also applies to videos and CDs. Videos are $25 for a yearly contribution or $500 for a lifetime contribution. CDs are $20 for a yearly contribution or $400 for a lifetime contribution. You can make your contribution and finish off your Christmas shopping list by visiting the library and asking about the Adopt a Book Program. Be the person who gave the gift that kept on giving – both to the lucky recipient and the community. Adopt a Book!
