Last chance for Winter Classic tickets

comment

Events at the 17th Annual Telus Winter Classic, a fundraising event for the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, are quickly selling out.

The event takes place on Jan. 23-24, and individual tickets are available for the Whistler Winetastic tasting event on Friday and the BlackBerry Fire and Ice Gala dinner and auction at the Roundhouse on Saturday evening. You can also register a team to get tickets to both events, as well as tickets to a team breakfast, a chance to ski with professional athletes, and a fun race event.

Proceeds from the Winter Classic and a summer golf tournament go towards local non-profit organizations.

For tickets, call 604-938-7321, or email foundation@intrawest.com.

Kermodes hosting Columbia at home

The Quest University Kermodes are hosting a string of home basketball games this weekend, Jan. 16-17, against the University of Northern B.C. On both nights the women play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. The following week, Friday, Jan. 23, they are facing Columbia Bible College.

Last week both teams played away at Langara College, and were unable to come up with a win.

First Atomic Ski and Snowboard Cross this weekend

The first of two amateur ski and snowboard cross events is taking place this weekend, Jan. 17-18, and is open to athletes of all ages.

The format is the same as last year. Saturday is a training day, followed by timed seeding runs, while Sunday goes from training into the brackets where skiers and snowboarders face off in groups of two, three and four, depending on registration numbers, to see who advances to the next round. There are only 16 spaces available in each category, so register early.

There is a competitors’ meeting at the top of the course on Blackcomb at 10:30 a.m. each day, and competitions get underway at 10:45 a.m.

There are three competitive categories for boys and girls, skiers and snowboarders; 13 and under, ages 14-16, and 17 and over. Helmets are mandatory and other protective gear is strongly recommended.

Advance registration is available at Whistler Blackcomb Guest Relations for $35, or you can register on race day until 9:45 a.m. in the Rendezvous Lodge.
