Kokanee Freeride concert series lineup announced


Ten bars, 10 nights, 10 parties on offer

With a theme of 10 bars, 10 nights, 10 bands, the Kokanee Freeride Concert Series at the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival is a top showcase for recording artists during the April 12-21 festival.

"The organizing of this year’s lineup for the festival has a been a team effort, involving all the bar managers in town," says Kristen Robinson, music producer for the WSSF.

With many eyes on Whistler during the festival, musicians and record labels do the dance of relationship building.

The New Deal, who brought the house down at the GLC with their electronica dance progressive-beat combo, are one band that’s been gaining momentum this past year.

They return to the venue on Friday, April 12. The Toronto trio, which features bassist Dan Kurtz, Darren Shearer on drums, and Jamie Shields on keys, played Moby’s Area One Tour.

The Hopping Penguins play Dusty’s on April 13, while the Boot Pub hosts punk act Huskvarna April 14. The Penguins, known for their jumping shows and a large horn and percussion section, bring covers like Billy Paul’s Me and Mrs. Jones to the mix.

Buffalo Bill’s brings in Edmonton-based band, The Schematics and their thick, melodic grooves on Sunday, April 14. Burn Unit appears at Garfinkel’s on April 15 and at Maxx Fish the following night. Brickhouse rocks Moe Joe’s on April 17.

In conjunction with Freeskier magazine, the Savage Beagle hosts a pajama-themed party on Friday, April 19. Canadian songstress Ivana Santilli sings from her latest album, Brown, at the Shack on April 20. Santilli’s musical repertoire includes keys, trumpet and piano.

April 21 brings alternative act Side 67 and Super Shift to Merlin’s, capping the week.

Tommy Africa’s lineup has yet to be confirmed.
