Arts News: Submit now to Comedy Quickies

The Whistler Presents free outdoor concert series returns this month with a stacked lineup of Canadian and international artists slated to play Olympic Plaza.

Produced by Brandlive, the series will feature Deya Doya (July 28); Steel Pulse (July 29); Jose Gonzalez (July 30); Hannah Georgas (Aug. 5); The Strumbellas (Aug. 6); Sarah Harmer (Aug. 26); Whitehorse (Aug. 27); The Acoustical Sounds of Big Sugar (Sept. 2); Mother Mother (Sept. 3); and former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page (Sept. 10).

Another highlight will be the live CBC broadcast of the final concert of beloved Canadian rockers The Tragically Hip on Aug. 20, following lead singer Gord Downie's cancer diagnosis.

"I'm pleased to see such a standout lineup for this year's popular Whistler Presents summer concert series," said Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden in a release. "Now in their sixth year, the concerts have become a large part of the excitement and vibe of visiting Whistler in the summer."

Whistler Presents was made possible thanks to provincial funding from the Resort Municipality Initiative.

Comedy Quickies returns

Comedy Quickies, the kickoff event to the 2016 Whistler Writers Festival, is looking for armchair comedians, writers, performers and humourists of all stripes to bring the funny.

The comedy variety show asks writers to submit their best five-minute-or-less sketch, stand-up routine, monologue, original song or poem for a chance to see it come to life on the Maury Young Arts Centre stage. This year's show is headlined by noted scribe and spoken word artist Kevan Anthony Cameron, also known as Scruffmouth.

The producers will work with the selected finalists to hone, cast and rehearse their piece ahead of the show on Oct. 13. All finalists will be compensated for their work and have the chance to take home hundreds of dollars worth of cash and prizes for Best Writing and the audience award for Best Act. Submissions are due by Aug. 15.
