Hundreds of residents on the Whistler Housing Authority waitlist dropped by the Cheakamus Crossing development on Saturday to tour the first duplex homes and take a short drive around the construction site. By the end of last week all of the planned neighbourhoods were underway — Whitewater, River Bend, The Rise, The Heights, The Terrace, The Springs, The Falls, and the Whistler Hostel, athletes lodge, athlete townhomes and high performance centre.
Cheakamus Crossing will serve as the athletes’ village during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and will be handed back to the Whistler 2020 Development Corporation to be converted into resident housing in June of 2010. After refitting the properties, the first residents are expected to move in by September of 2010.
Whistler Housing Authority manager Marla Zucht says the waitlist for Cheakamus Crossing has been closed since June 30 with 500 people registered to purchase the employee-restricted properties. The presale date is Oct. 1.
“Right now the sales team is going through the Cheakamus Crossing waitlist, contacting everybody to determine what development they want to go into — Whitewater, The Rise — and how many bedrooms they’re looking for, one bedroom up to the bigger three-bedroom places.”
Purchasers will be required to put down $1,000 deposit on signing, and then two per cent of the sale price after the first 60 days. Another three per cent will be due one year out from the closing date.
The project includes approximately 152 townhomes, 67 condominiums, 55 WHA rental units, 24 seniors housing units, and 20 market townhomes. The sizes range from 400 square feet to 2,000 square feet, and prices from $100,000 for a studio apartment to about $500,000 for a three-bedroom with a den.
Meanwhile the presale for the Rainbow Development is just getting underway. According to their website, three duplex units have already sold in Phase 1, and five single family homes in Phase 2. More information is available at www.rainbowatwhistler.ca.
