Residents of Garibaldi Highlands were rattled Saturday as an improvised explosion device (IED) destroyed a car on Skyline Drive.
On November 20 at about 11:39 p.m., Squamish RCMP got a report of an explosion in a residential driveway. Police soon determined that a 1988 Jeep Cherokee, belonging to an individual who's known to police, was demolished in the explosion. Officers checked several people living in the residence and nearby neighbours and no one was injured.
The residence where the explosion occurred and another nearby were evacuated during a police investigation while members waited for an Explosive Disposal Unit and Forensic Identification team from the Lower Mainland to come help determine whether there were any secondary devices in other vehicles at the scene.
For now, police believe the owner of the vehicle was the target of the explosion and no secondary devices were found. The RCMP are offering a cash reward of $2,000 for any information that leads to an arrest or charge. Anyone who wishes to come forward can remain anonymous, and they're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
