It hasn't been that long since Whistler Gymnastics started fielding athletes in the Level 3 Provincial division, but since the first few athletes made the leap the team has had at least a few Level 3s training every year with the competitive program.
This past weekend at the BC Artistic Gymnastics Championships in North Vancouver, the team hit a new high with one Level 3 athlete reaching the podium at provincials. Keeley Wentzel tied for first on the vault and added another gold medal on bars to place fourth all around out of 24 competitors — many of them from large clubs that train four to eight more hours more per week than the Whistler gymnasts.
Carly Mann was 15th all around, and earned a ribbon with a fifth place result in vault.
Jackson Hailey also earned a gold medal in Vault in Level 2 Argo and was sixth on bars. However, she didn't have strong results on floor or beam, and placed 32nd all around out of 47 athletes.
In Level 2 Tyro, Gigi Kranjc won a bronze on the vault and placed 12th all around out of 46 competitors. Gabby Flynn was 23rd with a seventh place result on vault and Hannah Peatfield 38th.
In Level 2 Novice, Caitlin MacConnachie was 33rd. Her best result was 15th on bars.
The athletes qualified to compete at the provincials at the Zone 5 championships in February. To advance, athletes had to place in the top six in their division.
Whistler Gymnastics has a few events remaining, including the annual Ogopogo Invitational in Kelowna. They are also accepting registration for summer camps.
Vancouver Circus School programs are also underway at the gymnastics club. For more, visit www.whistlergymnastics.com.
