After months of training, the competitive teams from Whistler Gymnastics Club will test their skills at a zone meet in Vancouver this Sunday, kicking off their participation in the Canada-wide Gymnastics Awareness Week.
Whistler Gymnastics defines the sport as "the foundation of human movement (that) provides the building blocks necessary for development in all sports. Gymnastics teaches children how to listen and follow direction while at the same time developing self-esteem and confidence in a positive learning environment. Gymnastics increases speed, strength, agility, co-ordination, balance and flexibility of both the mind and body."
This year the club is celebrating the week in many different ways.
The youngest recreation classes, the Highflyers and Sprites, will celebrate on Monday, Feb. 10, with Xs and Os gym buddies participants are invited to bring a friend or family member, real or stuffed, to gymnastics class to share in the activities.
Older recreation classes, including Classics, Acronauts, Mini Rebounders, Rebounders and Pre Kips, will participate in a colouring contest or a writing contest explaining why they love gymnastics. Winning entries will be published, and rewarded with a Whistler gymnastics tank top and gym shorts.
