Whistler’s new garbage disposal bylaw, which will require everyone to have bear-proof garbage containers, was withdrawn from the council agenda Monday as the timeline for implementation may be speeded up. The bylaw, which would have required bear-proof containers throughout the valley by April 15, 2001, was scheduled for adoption by council Monday. A new deadline to have the containers in place was not announced. Acting director of public works Brian Barnett has said the private sector will be largely responsible for acquiring and installing the containers, which cost in the region of $1,000 each. The new bylaw also stipulates no garbage can be stored outside. It requires all waste that could attract dangerous wildlife be stored indoors, in wildlife-resistant commercial bins or in wildlife resistant enclosures. Barnett said the bylaw is another step toward minimising bear-human conflicts. The municipality has also applied to increase the $75 fine for improper storage of trash to $500.
