It’s amazing who you find living in the Sea to Sky corridor. One very famous transplant is none other than one of the most acclaimed tenors of our time, Siegfried Jerusalem, who has settled part time in Squamish.

Jerusalem has appeared on every major operatic stage, from New York’s Metropolitan Opera to Milan’s La Scala, and performed for many years at Germany’s prestigious Wagner Festival in Bayreuth. He is considered one of the world’s finest Heldentenors, an operatic term whose literal translation is "hero tenor".

Regarded above all as a Richard Wagner specialist, Jerusalem’s rich tone, clear, virile voice and commanding stage presence has been admired not only on the world's great stages, but also in many video recordings. He was unforgettable in Wagner's "Ring" production, a role to this day that brings him fans of every age.

Born in Oberhausen, Germany, in 1940, Siegfried Jerusalem began his musical career as an orchestral bassoonist. He made his debut as a singer at the Stuttgart Opera in 1975. He has been performing at the Bayreuth Festival for over 20 years now, and has sung at all of the world's major opera houses. Next to Wagner's music, his repertoire comprises parts by Gluck and Mozart, and covers a broad spectrum ranging from the Viennese operetta to contemporary musical theatre.

Jerusalem will host an evening of art and song at BAG with the students from the University of Music, Nuremberg-Augsberg. Works by Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Spohr, Handel, Strauss, Cverdi, Mahler, Tosti and of course Wagner will be featured in this rare, one-night-only performance.

Tickets are $12 in advance from the Brackendale Art Gallery and Mostly Books. The Eagle Theatre is approximately 40 km south of Whistler off Highway 99. Look for the signs on the highway and turn right. Phone 604-898-3333 for more details.
