Feature - Hearing from the candidates

Anyone following the June 28 federal election has heard what the party leaders have to say. And if they haven’t heard enough, further information on the parties’ policies is available on their Web sites.

But what about the individual candidates?

Much of this week’s paper is dedicated to introducing the candidates in the two local ridings, West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast and Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon. Both ridings are enormous in size and include significant geographic barriers. These factors have contributed to the fact that there will be only one all-candidates meeting in the corridor during this election campaign, on Monday, June 21 at the Sea to Sky Hotel in Squamish.

Voters in Pemberton and D’Arcy, however, will not have an opportunity to see and hear all their candidates together; not unless they get to an all-candidates meeting in the Fraser Valley.

The ridings were re-drawn in British Columbia this year, to accommodate additional B.C. seats in Parliament, and that means that for the first time Pemberton is in a different riding than Whistler and Squamish – the riding of Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon.

For all of these reasons our coverage in this issue is focussed on the candidates.
