Radiohead covers, originals served up

Who: Steve Wright

Where : Crystal Lounge

When: Feb. 22 & 23

Ex-Whistler Steve Wright brings his guitar and some obscure cover tunes to the Crystal Lounge Feb. 22 and 23.

"I lived in Whistler in ’93 through ’95, when live music was just starting up and I began playing around town" he says.

"As a solo act, I play obscure covers, like Radiohead’s Knives Out and Morphine’s Cure for Pain."

Wright’s plural outfit, the band Mazinaw, has performed with Nice to Luv You’s 54-40, The Rheostatics, and Luther Wright and the Wrongs.

Living with Murphy, Mazinaw’s debut album on thin man records in East Vancouver, features Wright on vocals, guitar, and "playschool toys," Matt Brain on drums and vocals, and Ryen Froggatt on bass.

Guests on the 13-track record, which gets airplay on CBC Radio One and The Fox, include Shannon Saunders of the Paperboys and John Korsrud of Hard Rubber Orchestra.

Wright also plays acoustic versions of Mazinaw’s songs, like the eclectic Bobber and Gun at Heart. You can hear them at the Crystal Lounge.
