Debit card fraud passes $35,000

Whistler residents are once again urged to review their bank statements to look for any suspicious activity, following 14 complaints of fraud totaling over $35,000.

It is believed that a thief is using an electronic device to record card information and PIN numbers, and then manufacturing phony cards that they can use to withdraw cash. All types of bankcards are susceptible to the fraud.

If you suspect any transactions on your bank statement you should make a report to the RCMP and contact your financial institution immediately. The RCMP are investigating bank statements to determine whether there is a common location where the identity theft may have occurred, as well as reviewing any videotape they can find that shows the thief or thieves withdrawing money with a fraudulent card.
