What: Soul Kitchen 10 th Anniversary
Who: Dj Czech and StinkMitt
Where: Tommy Africas
When: Sunday, Feb. 23
Ten years is a long time to do anything, especially to keep a regular club night going in the fickle word of music trends. But DJ Czech has pulled it off.
The host of Tommy Africas Sunday night residency, Soul Kitchen, has brought big-name and big-future electronic acts to Whistler from all over the world every winter since 1993. He said its the diverse crowds that keep the night alive.
"Every season theres a new group of locals and then you have the revolving tourist trade each week, so the crowd is always fresh and re-energizing itself each week," said Czech.
Looking back, the popular DJ said the spirit behind the night has morphed from "strictly house" in the early years to the current day vibe of "anything goes," as long as its good.
"People are so much more open-minded to different musical influences these days. Youll have a house track that has drum n bass in it or a funk track with beats, its all mixed in together and so much harder to define, and thats the future of the business," said Czech.
The10-year anniversary will see Czech in charge for the first time at one his own yearly celebrations.
"Normally I get other DJs to head the anniversaries but this year I wanted to do it myself and get some good friends around me."
His friends are none other than the infamous electro clash superstars, StinkMitt, two ferocious and foul-mouthed MCs taking the nation by storm. MC Jenni Craige and MC Betti Forde are a parody duo of white trash-talking divas from the gutter.
Dressed to kill, the girls pack a powerful punch of profanities and sleaze against a backdrop of flowing beats. Behind the StinkMitt mask they are actually seasoned professionals. Craige moonlights as house music recording artist Lady Precise while Forde has almost finished a master's degree in women's studies and is the author of a book on outspoken punk poet Lydia Lunch.
But well stick with the persona of porn and pure filth they will bring to Tommys dance floor. MC Jenni Craige is a single mother of six, transplanted from Chilliwack to Surrey, hoping to find at least one of the fathers of one of her babies. Instead she finds MC Betti Forde, a mid-30s cougar whose lust for drugs, alcohol and bad banger bars would eventually lead both of them on a downward spiral into the underworld of sex, substance abuse and indie-rap. Faced with eviction from their trailer park and no money for pabulum, StinkMitt took to the stage.
Sounds like a show not to miss lock up your sons for this one. Tickets available at the door from 9 p.m.
