For the first time, members of the Whistler Chamber of Commerce will be able to elect board members.
A change made last October to the chamber’s bylaws now allows the organization’s 750 members to log onto the chamber’s website during election time and vote for their preferred candidates.
Previous boards were appointed through nominations by other board members. They were then ratified during December’s general annual meeting.
“This new election process will undoubtedly advance the board’s connection and responsiveness to the needs of the full membership,” said board chair David Davenport.
A total of eight two-year board positions may be up for election in November. The chamber’s current board consists of 22 members. Under the new bylaws, directors can serve on the board for a maximum of eight consecutive years.
Nominees for as many eight new board positions will be accepted from Sept. 19 to Nov. 1. Nomination forms will be available both online and at the chamber’s website. Each nominee must be endorsed by three other members in good standing.
On Nov. 9 th , nominee profiles will be uploaded to the chamber’s website and voting instructions e-mailed to members. The election will then take place online from Nov. 10 to 20. Security measures will be in place and a third party will monitor the election to ensure confidentiality.
The results of the Chamber’s first ever election will be announced during the Dec. 19 annual general meeting. The newly elected board members will be sworn in during the first board meeting of 2008.
