As the deadline for nominations neared the race for seats on municipal council heated up this week, with a sixth candidate announcing he was seeking the mayor’s chair and 10 people contesting the six councillor positions. Stewart Glen, an actor, artistic director and part-time cab driver is the latest candidate for mayor. Former councillor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden, former freestyle skiing champion Stephanie Sloan, retired bank executive Ted Milner and Blackcomb Ski Club coach Brian Young have declared they are candidates for seats on council. The deadline for filing nomination papers is Oct. 11. Glen said the main plank in his platform would be to mount a bid for Whistler to host the Olympics. The bid would create greater awareness of Whistler while also bringing in federal and provincial funds. He feels a successful bid would create more affordable housing, through the building of an athletes’ village, and spark development of cultural and educational facilities in Whistler. Wilhelm-Morden, a lawyer with Race and Company, served two terms as a municipal councillor, from 1984 to 1986 and from 1988 to 1990. She was one of four candidates for mayor in 1990, finishing second to Ted Nebbeling by a mere 40 votes. Wilhelm-Morden feels that as Whistler approaches buildout the community must take stock, deal with issues such as housing, financial sustainability and transportation and live with the cap on development "to see what this town is like once the dust settles." In addition to being a three-time world freestyle skiing champion, Sloan is president of Dave Murray Enterprises Ltd., which runs a summer ski and snowboard camp on Blackcomb and the Women Only ski programs on Whistler Mountain. She has been active in the Advisory Parks and Recreation Commission and the Public Art Committee. Sloan intends to focus her campaign on infrastructure issues, including affordable housing, the development of the library and museum, education and arts and culture. Milner is a retired bank executive who has worked in corporate and government finance, mostly in Toronto. He moved to Whistler about a year ago but has owned property here for nearly a decade. Young is a four-year resident of Whistler and a coach with the Blackcomb Ski Club. Municipal and school board elections are Nov. 16.
