Bizarre Bazaar a showcase for local artisans

It’s that time of year again! Whistler’s 17 th annual Bizarre Bazaar showcases the Sea to Sky Corridor’s most talented artisans once again Friday, Dec. 2 to Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Telus Whistler Conference Centre.

If you are looking to get all your Christmas shopping done in one day, Bizarre Bazaar is the right place to be. Admission is by donation and all proceeds benefit the Whistler Arts Council, champion of promoting the growth of arts and culture in Whistler.

More than 100 artisans will sell and promote handcrafted goods, including everything from pottery and blown glass to Christmas cards and woodcarvings.

Among the talent showcased at Whistler’s biggest Christmas craft fair will be Claudine Molson-Sellers, selling her baked goodies from Whistler’s Own Bakeshop. If you’ve tried her cooking before – fruitcake from Nesters and the IGA or perhaps a Hippie Bar from Behind the Grind – then you’ll probably spend your weekend at her stall hording the samples.

Besides her regular bars and biscotti, Molson-Sellers will also sell Christmas treats, including stollen (German cake), a variety of fruitcakes, as well as Christmas bark and cookies.

Molson-Sellers and her husband Alex started their bakeshop two years ago, but this is their first appearance at Bizarre Bazaar. They hope to gain new customers and increase awareness of their business at the craft fair, especially now that they have their own space in Function Junction — It’s a big change from working late hours and renting other restaurants’ kitchens. Check out the wheat-free Hippie Bar if you have food allergies.

Local artist Cary Lopes will also set up shop at the bazaar. Her hand-painted kids clothing is always a big hit, but this year she hopes to raise awareness of her pet portraits. If you’re interested in the painted kids clothing bring your old jeans or jean jacket and Lopes will turn them into works of art.

For the young artist on your shopping list, there are kits with pre-painted backgrounds, so the characters in any masterpiece have a great scene to pose in.

Besides Molson-Sellers and Lopes there will be numerous other artists selling a wide variety of goods, including wood crafts, candles and Christmas decorations, just to name a few. Bizarre Bazaar is the best place to start, or finish, your Christmas shopping.
