Follow the boarders down the rabbit hole

If snow on the peaks and the drop in temperature didn't indicate the end of summer, the appearance of ski and snowboard films surely will.

Maurice Young Millennium Place is kicking off the pre-winter film season Friday night with the latest from Absinthe Films, Neverland.

Featuring Travis Rice, Dan Brisse, Bode Merrill, Nicolas Muller, Sylvain Bourbousson, JP Solbert, Romain deMarchi, DCP, Marc Frank Montoya and many more, "Neverland is a state of mind, a mountain pushed up from the ground by imagination. Anyone can go but most people have trouble with the simple directions: Follow your dreams."

Follow the boarders down the rabbit hole Friday at 7 or 9 p.m. at Millennium Place.

Showdown winner shows images

Another indication of winter is a photo exhibit at MY Millennium Place by Jordan Manley, winner of the Pro Photographer Showdown at the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

Manley, who is a senior photographer for Powder magazine, opened the exhibit earlier this week with his Showdown-winning slideshow. His work is on display through Oct. 31.

Sacred Flight premieres at VIFF

The world premiere of Sacred Flight, a new work by veteran filmmakers Peter Chrzanowski and Ivan Hughes, will be at next month's Vancouver International Film Festival.

Sacred Flight tells the story of Chrzanowski's journey to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains in remote north-eastern Columbia. The region is home to the reclusive Kogi, one of the last remaining traditional indigenous cultures. The Kogi have maintained their purety by avoiding contact with the outside world.

Chrzanowski first encountered the Kogi a decade ago. He was not allowed to summit the mountains at that time. The film chronicles his return with a paraglider for one sacred flight.

The VIFF takes place Oct. 1-16. Screening times for Sacred Flight will be confirmed in the next weeks.
