Allen taking students to meet bears

Youths can get acquainted this month with one of our largest neighbours in the valley: the black bear.

Researcher, Michael Allen, leads the Field Ecology Camp being offered through the Whistler Parks and Recreation Department on Saturdays, Sept. 15-Oct. 13.

Allen has been teaching bear awareness in Sea to Sky Corridor schools for over four years, but this is the first time he’ll be taking youths into the field for the up-close-and-personal approach. Students will assist Allen with surveying bear dens, day beds and berry patches on Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. The camp is offered to 10-12 year olds, who will also be introduced to the use of a compass, clinometer and GPS receiver while getting the opportunity to catch a glimpse of local bruin celebs like Jeanie and Jake. The fee is $100 for five sessions. Enrolment is very limited.

For more information on the Youth Camp call 604-935-PLAY. Or visit Michael Allen this Sunday, Sept. 9 when he’ll be set up at the Whistler Family FunFest at Rainbow Park, 4-7 p.m.
